In case you didn’t know, Amazon has started working on a new Lord of the Rings show for streaming. Now, after more than a year, the company has finally finished with casting! So far, the TV show has added four new names to a cast of nearly 40. Read on to see who will lead the new show…
Casting For Amazon’s New TV Show
Of course, it was not that long ago that Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, and Ian McKellen portrayed the characters of Lord of the Rings on the big screen. However, do not worry, the Amazon show will not tread the same trail. Not exactly, at least. The new Amazon show will focus on Middle Earth in the peaceful times, set right before the The Fellowship of the Ring. The new show “will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness,” Amazon explained. While viewers don’t know much else yet, there’s an excellent reason. After all, thanks to the internet, spoilers can mean death to a new show!
However, some business details about the new show have slipped out. The show is a serious project, with Amazon Studios, the Tolkien Estate and Trust, publisher HarperCollins, and Warner Bros. Entertainment’s New Line Cinema all chipping in. Rumor has it that Amazon would like to see the show run for five seasons, with the possibility of a spin-off film. All in all, Amazon is expected to put up $1 billion for the first season alone! Only time will tell if it will pay off, though.
Now, another piece of news has leaked: Amazon has finished casting. And the new Lord of the Rings cast looks quite impressive!
Secretive Lord Of The Rings
Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings show will have quite the cast! Last week the streaming giant announced that Charles Edwards (The Crown), Will Fletcher (The Girl Who Fell), Amelie Child-Villiers (The Machine), and Beau Cassidy will all join the cast. They will stand alongside the likes of Ramona Garrity, Nazanin Boniadi, Trystan Gravelle, and many other veterans of television and film. While the studio has decided against casting any A-listers, almost all the actors have ample screen time.
“So I really can’t say a lot, other than you will be glad you knew so little when you see it,” actor Benjamin Walker said about the new show. “It is a bit nebulous at this point. We’ve been here a long time and they’ll let us go when they’re done with us.”
While the coronavirus pushed back the start date, Amazon has also started working on director! J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) will direct the first two episodes, as well as produce the show alongside Belén Atienza, Lindsey Weber (10 Cloverfield Lane), Bruce Richmond (Game of Thrones), Callum Greene, and Sharon Tal Yguado. Meanwhile, Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad), Jason Cahill (The Sopranos), and Justin Doble (Stranger Things) will write the show. Needless to say, Lord of the Rings fans are certainly excited for his new show on Amazon!
