The singer Demi Lovato launched a podcast – and the first episode already was highly personal and intimate. Lovato has become the latest celebrity to come out as non-binary!
Demi Lovato’s Newly Discovered Identity
The 28-year-old pop star Demi Lovato announced that they are non-binary. “And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary,” the songwriter said on her new podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato. “With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and still am discovering.” Lovato said they are still learning and trying to understand themselves more, so they are no expert in the non-binary field.
To understand non-binary more, though, they asked Alok Vaid-Menon, a gender non-conforming writer and performer, to join the first podcast episode. The two met at a similar discussion with Sam Smith, another non-binary celebrity. Later, Lovato and Vaid-Menon became great friends! “[Non-binary people] may define their gender as falling somewhere in between man and woman, or they may define it as wholly different from these terms,” Vaid-Menon says.
And while Lovato understands that using the correct pronouns can be hard at first, they are still asking for at least a little bit of effort when discussing them…
Coming To Terms With Non-Binary Folks
Lovato joined a circle of other non-binary celebrities that came out in the past years, including Sam Smith, Jonathan Van Ness, and Indya Moore. These celebrities say it’s easy to adopt the new pronouns – after all, it’s not as though we don’t use gender-neutral terms all the time. If you found some cash on the ground, most of us would say, “someone lost their money.” One can apply the same rules to another person, until they learn their gender. And if they are non-binary, nothing needs to change!
Unfortunately, Lovato had to deal with all sorts of trolls commented right after making the announcement. Most notoriously, Piers Morgan tweeted that he “identif(ies) as an annoying attention-seeking celebrity.” Still, Lovato found a way to overcome it all. “Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way,” Lovato shared despite the hate and confusion coming their way.
Lovato proves that acceptance and balance are critical, empowering all humans around the world. Thanks to them, many younger people won’t be scared to come out as well!
