Although many fans don’t know it, Meryl Streep has been happily married for over 40 years. That’s right! How does she manage to keep everything under wraps? Well, she’s not only a very private person, but her husband is not another A-list celebrity from Hollywood!
Meryl Streep And Don Gummer’s Love Story

We’ve all seen a lot of Hollywood couples come and go over the years. Unfortunately, Tinseltown does not seem to create long-lasting relationships. When it comes to Meryl Streep, though, as always, she manages to buck the trend. While the 69-year-old boasts three Oscars and 21 nominations, few know that she’s been married to Don Gummer, 72, a sculptor, for over four decades!
The two first met a few months after Streep had lost an earlier partner, actor John Cazale. Cazale tragically died of lung cancer after the two lived together for three years, leaving Streep heartbroken. Meanwhile, Gummer, a friend of Streep’s brother, offered his apartment to her while he was traveling. Soon after, Gummer returned and the two hit it off. In fact, when he returned, Streep didn’t leave! They fell deeply in love almost instantly, marrying that same year!
A very private person, Streep does not open up about her relationship very often. However, most recently, during her 2012 Academy Awards speech, Streep talked about her husband after winning Best Actress for Julie & Julia. “First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me,” the actress said at the time.
Stealing The Spotlight

Just because Gummer doesn’t play the Hollywood game does not mean he’s a no-name. The sculptor has earned both a BFA and MFA from Yale University. He started out by creating avant-garde tabletop and wall-mounted sculptures, which ultimately led to 22 solo shows, as well as 12 group shows. In addition to his outstanding exhibitions, Gummer has earned several prestigious awards for his sculpting work! Today, he continues to work, although in a more traditional fashion.
Over the years, the two artistic souls have welcomed a total of four children: Henry Wolfe, 39, Mamie, 35, Grace, 33, and Louisa, 27. Now, most of their children have also found their way into the art world. Henry is a musician, Mamie and Grace started acting, while Louisa is a model. Will these Streep-Gummers become the next vanguards of the entertainment world? Only time will tell, but we’re sure both Streep and Gummer will support them every step of the way!
