Casting the perfect actresses and actors for parts is certainly one of the most important parts of pre-production that can make or break a movie.
So, it’s no surprise that many celebrities often audition for a variety of roles only to be turned down in the end. Here are some of the most surprising almost-castings that could’ve changed the way you view your favorite films.
Lucy Hale in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Lucy Hale is primarily known for starring in the teen drama ‘Pretty Little Liars’ on ABC. At some point though, the singer-actress decided to go for more mature roles.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Hale revealed that she auditioned for the lead female role of the film adaptation of the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ book. She shared how she had to perform a rather risqué monologue for the audition and admitted how she was ‘a little naive about it all’.
Angelina Jolie in ‘Clueless’
‘Clueless’ is a teen movie classic that’s probably most memorable for its fashion moments and perfect casting choices. But did you know that Angelina Jolie could’ve played Cher Horowitz in the film instead of Alicia Silverstone?
The ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ actress reportedly sent an audition tape for the part but casting director Carrie Frazier thought Jolie was the total opposite of who they were looking for.
Matthew McConaughey in ‘Titanic’

It’s difficult to imagine ‘Titanic’ without actor Leonardo DiCaprio as the charming free-spirit Jack Dawson. But in an alternate universe, Matthew McConaughey could’ve landed the now-iconic role in the 1997 epic film.
Looking back at his audition, the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ actor said that he thought he did well and that he ‘nailed it’. It looks like someone else did better than him though and DiCaprio ended up landing the lead role instead.
Britney Spears in ‘The Notebook’
It’s no secret that Ryan Gosling and Britney Spears go way, way back. They worked together as kids in ‘The All-New Mickey Mouse Club’ along with Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.
And the two of them could’ve reunited as adults in the romance drama film ‘The Notebook’. Spears and Gosling even reached the screen testing part of the audition. However, the pop singer ended up losing to Rachel McAdams.
Miles Teller in ‘La La Land’

Miles Teller was supposed to play the lead in the award-winning film but had to be replaced after he reportedly left due to long contract negotiations.
Teller was initially excited to work once again with director Damien Chazelle, who directed him in the critically-acclaimed film ‘Whiplash’.
