Sometimes, adults make the mistake of thinking there are no excellent G-rated movies. However, that’s simply not the case! Don’t believe the skeptics – read on to discover the best movies that are rated G. You’re bound to find something the whole family will love!
Ratatouille
One of the best animated films of all time, Ratatouille features an incredible cast as well as a fantastic story. Brad Garrett, Lou Romano, Patton Oswalt, and Ian Holm, alongside the wonderful team at Pixar, tell the story of a rat with a desire to become a chef. While plenty of the fun comes from Remy, the anthropomorphic rat, and his human sidekick Alfredo Linguini, a young chef, there’s a deeper story here about chasing your dreams. While it’s hard not to recommend every Pixar movie, Ratatouille is undoubtedly one of the studio’s best.
Captains Courageous
Of course, not every G-rated classic needs to be a comedic romp! If you’re looking for something a little more serious but still lighthearted enough to keep the kids interested, Captains Courageous might just be the perfect choice. Based on the iconic Rudyard Kipling novel, Captains Courageous follows a young troublemaker rescued by a fisherman in the sea. The two then go on a high-sea adventure while returning home. With a cast that includes the likes of Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Mickey Rooney, and John Carradine, this is also the perfect way to introduce a youngster to classic cinema. Fun fact: Tracy ended up winning an Oscar for his role as fisherman Manuel Fidello, one of the few times a G-rated film has earned the Best Actor award!
Aladdin
Another Disney film, yes, but not another Pixar movie. And no, we’re not talking about the Aladdin remake, either. Nothing can compare to the original, especially thanks to an amazing performance from the late Robin Williams, who managed to bring the Genie to life with just his voice. Of course, the Genie isn’t the only thing that makes Aladdin work. From the gorgeous animation and catchy soundtrack to one of the best romantic stories on film, Aladdin has something for the whole family!
2001: A Space Odyssey
Alright, its true: if 2001: A Space Odyssey debuted today, it would likely receive a PG-13 rating. In case you didn’t know, at the time, there were only four ratings:
- Rated G: Suggested for general audiences.
- Rated M: Suggested for mature audiences – Parental discretion advised.
- Rated R: Restricted – persons under 16 not admitted, unless accompanied by parent or adult guardian.
- Rated X: Persons under 16 not admitted.
Regardless of what rating it would earn today, as it stands, it’s almost impossible not to acknowledge 2001 as one of the greatest G-rated movies ever and also one of the best films ever, period. The sci-fi adventure features incredible effects and writing, and also cemented director Stanley Kubrick in film history. It might seem a bit slow to some of the younger children, but middle schoolers and above are sure to find something fascinating on screen.
So, sit back, relax, and throw on a great G-rated classic this weekend. You’re sure to have a great time with the whole family!
