Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor and visionary who made countless contributions to science, engineering, and technology. He is best known for his inventions of alternating current electricity, x-rays, and radio transmission. But what many people don’t know is that he was also on track to becoming one of the world’s first billionaires.

Early Life
Tesla was born in 1856 in what is now Croatia. He moved to the United States in 1884 where he began working at Thomas Edison’s Pearl Street Station in New York City. During this time, he developed a series of revolutionary ideas and inventions that would define much of modern life as we know it today.
From designing an alternating current system that could transmit electricity over long distances, to inventing the fluorescent light bulb and wireless remote controls, Tesla had a remarkable ability to innovate and create far ahead of his time.
How did Tesla Die Penniless?
Yet despite all his successes, Tesla died penniless in 1943 with only $20 to his name — an unfathomable outcome given how close he was to achieving true financial success. In 1899 Tesla signed a contract with George Westinghouse, which secured him $216,000 for just 6 of his patents — roughly equivalent to about $6 million today.

Unfortunately, Westinghouse fell into financial hardship shortly after this period due to the dying demand for alternating current systems from electric companies nationwide. Tesla also encountered seemingly endless delays in receiving payments from investors for other projects he was working on, including the construction of Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island, which was intended as the primary station for wireless transmissions worldwide.
By 1916 most of Tesla’s investments had dried up due to a lack of interest or potential legal issues, which prevented him from ever fully realizing his plans or obtaining any real wealth from them. By all accounts, it seems clear that Nikola Tesla was well on track to becoming one of the world’s first billionaires before tragedy struck during his later years.
However, there are conflicting opinions surrounding why exactly he never reached such status despite all of his innovative achievements during this period. Some claim that it may have been due either directly or indirectly related complications resulting from feuds between himself and fellow inventors like Thomas Edison or Guglielmo Marconi (both of who managed to become wealthy thanks largely thanks their own accomplishments).

Others cite irresponsible decision-making when it came to finances, mismanaging funds received from investors, or simply bad luck, which prevented some of Tesla’s investment opportunities from panning out as planned.
Conclusion
Whatever the case may be, Nikola Tesla was clearly a genius far ahead of his time whose inability to make more money during his lifetime remains one of history’s greatest tragedies. If only things had gone differently, perhaps we would now be living in a world powered by free energy sources alongside other curious contraptions dreamed up by this remarkable man. Instead, we can only speculate what might have been possible if only Nikola Tesla had lived long enough to see some return on all these pioneering investments while they were still alive!
