Lost Italian village emerges out of the water for the first time anyone can remember – and the locals are shocked! Over seven decades it has been underwater. Only the top of the church had been outside before that, but the whole Curon is out of Lake Resia nowadays. The thing is, this 2.5-square-mile lake was artificial anyways as the village was flooded on purpose. First founded centuries ago, this place between the Austria and Switzerland borders gave home to many Italians by 1950. Later, over 160 houses had to be sacrificed to create a hydroelectric plant. That’s right, locals relocated because of the authorities! But the activity around it never came to a halt.

In fact, Curon became a popular destination for tourists. This location has been proven to be brilliant for hiking and exploring both in summer and winter. As soon as the lake froze, it opened a whole new world of opportunities for visitors. For example, they could walk on the tough ice and look at the famous church steeple up-close. Moreover, the destination with odd history inspired both a book and a Netflix series! Of course, it has a supernatural theme, and it was shot in real-life Curon. But it could never predict what would happen to the village in the year 2021.

Emerges After Decades

In 2021, 71 years later, the Curon village is finally out of the water. The team doing so claimed that it’s temporary, so anyone eager to explore the spot should book the flight there immediately. The sight is worth the money! Old ruins are both mesmerizing and terrifying after they emerged from the lake, carrying interesting energy within them. Locals are not afraid to walk around the dissolving piece of history. In the past, they’ve only seen the lake and the church there, so coming down to the bottom is rather peculiar. Unfortunately, houses didn’t stand the flood. Steps, cellars, and walls, on the other hand, survived through the years and tons of water. People now have a chance to come face to face with old architecture.

Luisa Azzolini was one of the lucky people who’s been living next to Curon. After learning the sudden news, she quickly came to see if they were real. She then went to write about her experience on Twitter, attaching some pictures of the old village as well. It was a rather “strange feeling,” she said, walking over the ruins of the long-lost village. Even before it was drained of the water, many shared different legends about the church. One of them said that the church bells still ring several times a week, although they were removed long ago.

Now, there will be more legends and spooky stories written about the intimidating ruins, for sure. As long as the village is out of the water and opened to exploration, tourists won’t leave the destination alone.
