Sure, scientists constantly find new planets, stars, and other space phenomena in galaxies and open space far, far away from us. However, to find something new nearby? That’s pretty strange! So you can only imagine how interested the internet became when China’s Yutu-2 moon rover discovered something fascinating on the lunar surface: a cube-shaped structure. That’s right! Read on to find out more…
Cube-Like Space Boulder
Given how infrequently humans visit space – even with the recent advances in rocket technology – every new discovery means something important. However, when someone discovers something new on the moon, it’s even more important. After all, the moon is our next-door neighbor, so to speak! Last week, the Chinese Yutu 2, a lunar rover, spotted something rather strange while rolling along the moon. Taking a look at the photos, it’s hard to conclude it’s anything other than a square-shaped structure!
“Under the dark and deep sky, a circle of winding mountains stood on the extension line of the sky and the moon. On the side, people can’t help but admire the extraordinary craftsmanship of the universe,” wrote One Space, the official blog of the Chinese National Space Agency (translated from the original). “The drivers zoomed in on the pictures, slowly admiring them one by one. Suddenly, an obtrusive cube on the northern skyline attracted their attention. This object pierced through the winding of the skyline, like a ‘mysterious hut.’ ”
Now, many worldwide are trying to figure out exactly what the square structure might be. Is it natural, a result of human interference on the moon, or something else entirely…
No Life Outside Earth
The official One Space blog thinks that it is likely the result of previous missions to the moon by other countries. They note the presence of a minor impact crater beside the cube-shaped object as evidence for their theory. However, not everyone agrees! Others think that it could simply be a rock outcropping, given the appearance of a cube because of the pixilation of the image. The only problem with this theory? Well, right angles rarely appear in nature, and the object looks pretty darn square!
Of course, internet users had their own ideas about the strange, cube-shaped object. “Get a bit closer, and you’d see it’s a nucleic acid test site for COVID-19,” one social media user joked. “It’s the home of aliens!” another quipped. While we don’t know what the strange object is just yet, there is a bit of good news: Chinese officials have decided to alter the lunar rover’s official course to check it out. It should arrive in about two to three months. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll know what the cube-shaped object on the moon is by mid-2022!
